The Right Way to Choose a Solar Collector: Visit the Factory
At the 2023 Heat Pump Conference in Dalian, I heard Professor Wang Shuguo share a piece of advice with new heat pump distributors. He said:
“When choosing a heat pump product, don’t just look at the surface. With your current knowledge, it’s hard to judge its quality. The simplest and most effective way is to visit the manufacturer. Look at their strength, see how modern their production equipment is, check if they have their own laboratory, and compare the data from their lab with the product labels. Then you will know the answer.”
This advice struck me deeply, and I fully agree. In fact, this method also applies when choosing flat-plate solar collectors.
Start with the Big Picture
To understand the true quality of a flat-plate solar collector, you must first look beyond appearances. Study the company's R&D team, its laboratories, research institutes, patents, and industry standing. Check user feedback and the company's reputation.
These elements reveal the company's soft power. A manufacturer with strong R&D and innovation, backed by years of experience and customer trust, is much more likely to produce reliable products. Without this foundation, product quality is difficult to guarantee.
Next, Look at the Production Line
After reviewing the company's background, the next step is to evaluate its hard power.
The most effective way is simple: visit the factory.
The level of automation is a key factor. If automation is low, consistency cannot be ensured, and quality will suffer. Look at how advanced the equipment is, whether the production line is complete, whether processes are smooth, and whether workers are skilled. If everything looks good, then it is worth digging deeper.
Observe the Manufacturing Process
When you are in the factory, don't just walk around quickly. Pay attention to the critical steps:
Are the copper tubes straightened and cut accurately?
Are the welds on channels and backplates solid?
Are the nozzles welded neatly with good sealing?
Is leak testing carried out properly for every unit?
Are the frames assembled tightly and cleanly?
Is the glass cover sealed and glued without bubbles?
These details may seem small, but they determine product durability. Ask “why” as you observe. If possible, share your assumptions and let the factory confirm or correct them. Often, our assumptions mislead us and our customers.
Knowledge Builds Confidence
By understanding the company and its production process, you gain confidence in discussions with customers. Without this knowledge, you cannot answer professional questions, and your credibility suffers.
Customers may ask:
Is the absorber coating black chrome or blue film? Who made it? Is there a test report?
Are the pipes copper or brass? How thick are they? How resistant to corrosion? What pressure can they handle?
Is the system better suited for hot water or for heating?
If you cannot answer, you risk losing the deal and your professional image.
Stay True to Your Purpose
As businesspeople, our original goal is to act with integrity, work solidly, and build a bright future. If we don’t even understand our own products, how can we achieve that?
Therefore, if you want to choose the right solar collector, there is only one way: visit the factory.
Look at the company, the production line, the process, and the details. Use your eyes to observe, your mind to analyse, and your questions to verify. Only then can you select a truly high-quality product, provide peace of mind to customers, and build long-term success for yourself.
